Alagbagba Community Outreach
Alagbagba Summer School is a summer enrichment program for K-12 students in the underserved community of Ashi-Alagbagba, Ibadan, Nigeria. This year, Tiny&Great partnered with the organizers to have introductory classes to computer science and the skills required to flourish in this field of study. Due to the lack of access to computers, this program ran as an unplugged edition.
This past August, Tiny & Great partnered with the Alagbagba Summer School in Ashi-Alagbagba, Nigeria, to bring an innovative summer enrichment program to life. Focused on K-12 students in an underserved community, this program introduced participants to computer science, critical thinking, and problem-solving through an unplugged curriculum tailored to their unique needs.
A Program Designed for Impact
The program ran for three weeks, hosting five classes that emphasized foundational skills in computer science and beyond. Topics ranged from defining basic terms like "coding" and "data management" to exploring problem-solving techniques and critical thinking applications in daily life. Each session provided practical examples, interactive discussions, and group activities to ensure student engagement.
By the end of the program, students gained valuable insights into computer science careers, the skills required, and how to start their journey in the field. They also honed decision-making skills, learned to identify and solve problems systematically, and developed self-confidence through hands-on activities.
Highlights from the Program
Participation
Over 35 students attended each class, with volunteers dedicating their time to make the sessions meaningful.
Engagement
The students eagerly embraced new concepts, actively participated in group work, and shared their learnings during discussions.
Outcomes
Beyond academic concepts, students improved their confidence and learned to trust their instincts—a key step in building empowered futures.
Challenges & Recommendations
Despite its success, the program faced a few hurdles:
Large Class Sizes
Volunteers had difficulty reaching all students effectively.
Solution: Invest in PA systems for better communication.
Visual Learning Needs
Students responded well to visual aids but lacked consistent access.
Solution: Incorporate TV screens and multimedia tools in future sessions.
The Alagbagba Summer School has sparked a transformative movement. Seventeen students have already registered to join the newly formed Tiny & Great Club, continuing their journey of learning and exploration year-round.
But this is just the beginning. Tiny & Great dreams of expanding its initiatives to reach even more students in underserved communities, equipping them with the skills to succeed in a fast-evolving world.
